Allen’s acting work, away from his own films, tends toward streetwise, Runyonesque hustle-and-jivers, but the films themselves are a mixed bunch. He appeared in The Front as a smalltime bookie who agrees to let Zero Mostel, a blacklisted writer, use his name on TV scripts, only to become the hottest name in show business.
